Composite deck builders in Portland
A composite deck swaps wood boards for boards made largely of plastic, or entirely of it in the case of PVC. Composite deck builders in the Portland area put these boards on new decks and on the existing frames of tired wooden ones. Tell us what you have in mind and a local deck contractor will give you a free quote for the job.
The boards are only the top layer. Under a composite deck there is still a frame of posts, beams and joists, and it does the same job and needs the same permit as the frame under a wood deck. The Remodeling 2024 Cost vs. Value Report, for instance, defines its composite deck as composite boards on pressure-treated joists supported by 4x4 posts on concrete piers.
Composite, capped composite and PVC
Manufacturers describe their own boards differently, so it is worth reading their words rather than a sales summary. On their websites in October 2026:
- Composite is a blend of plastic and wood fiber. TimberTech describes its composite as “a blend of virgin and recycled polymers, along with organic material like wood flour”, and Trex says its composite is made “using 95% recycled plastic film and reclaimed sawdust.”
- Capped composite is composite with a protective outer shell. TimberTech’s composite collections have “a three- or four-sided cap”.
- PVC contains no wood at all. TimberTech says its Advanced PVC is “engineered from recycled material — with zero wood or organic fillers” and has “a four-sided protective cap”, and Trex sells a PVC line, Refuge, alongside its composites.
- Mineral-based composite is a newer variation: Deckorators says its Surestone technology “replaces wood fibers with durable minerals”.
How composite decking warranties work
Composite boards are sold with long limited warranties, and the details differ by line. Trex’s decking page lists 25-, 35- and 50-year limited residential warranties depending on the line. TimberTech covers its composite collections for 25 to 30 years, with a fade and stain warranty of the same length, and its Advanced PVC with a limited lifetime product warranty and a 50-year fade and stain warranty. Fiberon lists warranties from 25 years to lifetime depending on the product.
Two things to check before you choose a board. First, what the warranty covers: product defects, fading and staining are separate promises. Second, who installs it: TimberTech, Fiberon and Deckorators each offer extra labor or replacement cover when one of their registered or certified installers does the work, and Trex links a labor warranty for its TrexPro builders. If that matters to you, ask the contractor who quotes your deck whether they are registered with the brand you want.
What are the downsides of composite decking?
- It costs more up front. According to the Remodeling 2024 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com), the same 16 by 20 foot deck addition cost $23,166 in Portland with composite boards and $17,200 with wood ones. Those are 2024 figures for one standard project; our page on what a deck costs explains what that project includes.
- The frame is still wood. Composite boards do not protect the joists and beams underneath, which age like the frame under any wood deck.
- It may need a stiffer frame. The 2023 Oregon Residential Specialty Code limits joist spacing according to the decking material (R507.6), so re-decking an old frame with composite can mean adding joists.
- Warranties have conditions. They are limited warranties, they differ between product lines, and some extras depend on who installs the boards.

Choosing the boards
Choosing between treated wood, cedar and composite
OSU Extension notes that in Western states such as Oregon, Douglas-fir is most often treated with CA-C or ACQ preservatives, and that cedar costs more but resists decay. Composite and PVC boards are plastic-based and carry the manufacturer's own warranty.

Composite deck questions
Can composite decking go over an existing wood deck?
On a sound frame, yes. The old boards come off and composite goes down on the existing joists. The code limits joist spacing according to the decking material, so a frame built for wood boards may need extra joists first, and rot in the frame has to be fixed before new boards go on.
Does a composite deck need a permit in Oregon?
The board material does not change the rule. A deck whose walking surface is more than 30 inches above the ground, measured within 3 feet, needs a building permit under the Oregon Residential Specialty Code, whatever it is surfaced with.
How long do composite decking warranties last?
It depends on the brand and the product line. On their own websites in October 2026, Trex listed limited residential warranties of 25 to 50 years across its decking, and TimberTech listed 25 to 30 years for its composite collections and a limited lifetime product warranty for its Advanced PVC. Read what each warranty covers and whether it depends on who installs the boards.
